Zach Russ won both the boys singles event and boys doubles event at the U14 Kent Open on 25th May, 2013.
Seeded number two in the singles event, Zach eased through his qualifying box.
In the quarter-finals, Zach met number five seed, Luke Bailey of Kent, and won comfortably 21-9, 21-11. In the semi-final, Zach then played the number three seed, Kit Clement Dawson of Buckinghamshire, and eased to a 21-14,21-10 victory.
This set up a final against Joshua Foot of Essex. In a closer match, Zach won 21-7, 21-17.
In the doubles, Zach once again partnered Alex Cook (Oxfordshire).
Seeded number one, the pair comfortably won their qualifying box. A tough three game semi-final against Kit Clement Dawson and Gregory Saunders followed, with Zach and Alex coming out 19-21, 21-10, 21-12 winners.
In the other semi-final the Kent pairing of Rory Easton and Ethan Solly edged out Horsham’s Andrew Brownlie and partner, Luke Bailey (Kent), in three games 21-17, 17-21, 21-17 to earn a place in the final against Zach and Alex.
Zach and Alex won a close first game of the final 21-18, before powering ahead to win the second 21-12.
Seeded number three, Andrew Brownlie and Luke Bailey won their box with victories over the Sussex pair, Christopher Morgan and Ewan Robertson 21-6, 21-13, and the Surrey pair, Leon Griffiths and Gareth O’Brian 21-13, 21-14. Their narrow defeat in the semi-final match against Rory Easton and Ethan Solly yielded a bronze medal.
Eva Craig and Emma Ford won a bronze medal in girls doubles event at the U12 Oxfordshire Open on 12th May, 2013.
Seeded number one, the pair came second in their qualifying box having lost one of their games to Chloe Du and Lily Stent. This set up a quarter-final against Kiara Henry and Pamela Reyes. Eva and Emma edged a tight game 22-20 to earn a semi-final place against number two seeds from Devon, Lauren Cole and Emily Killoran.
The Devon pair won a very close match, 21-19.

Seeded number three in the singles event, Zach comfortably won his qualifying box to set up a quarter final against Avinash Gupta. Zach won this 21-13 to earn a sem-final against the number two seed, Jack Buckley. A 21-15 victory set up a final against Steven Stallwood. The final was won by Zach 21-16.
In the doubles event, Zach partnered Alex Cook (Oxfordshire).
Seeded number two, the pair won their qualifying box with victories over Prashan Clare and Ethan Solly, and Ali Bellagh and Benjamin Gilbert.
The pair then had to face the number three seeds, Horsham’s own Andrew Brownlie and partner Luke Bailey (Kent). In an extremely tight match, Zach and Alex edged ahead to win 24-22.
This set up a final against the Buckinghamshire number one seeds, Avinash Gupta and Steven Stallwood. Zach and Alex fought a hard match, but came up just short, losing 21-16.
Seeded number three, Andrew Brownlie and Luke Bailey won their box with victories over David Hong (Derbyshire) and William Jones (Surrey) 21-17, Tom Barton-Clapp (Middlesex) and Kaylan Jensen (Dorset) 21-8, and Warwickshire’s Callum Daniels and Daniel Morris 21-7. Their defeat, by the narrowest of margins, in the semi-final match against Zach and Alex delivered a bronze medal.
Zach Russ played for England in the U15 Home Countries Quadrangular Tournament on 4th and 5th May, 2013.
Zach reached the quarter-finals of the boys singles event, and then went on to win a silver medal in the boys doubles event with partner Sam Mckay.
Lydia Powell won the womens doubles event in the Essex Senior Gold held over two days on the 4th and 5th May, 2013.
Seeded number one, Lydia partnered Viki Williams.
In a straight knockout tournament, the pair met Lusia Anindita and Rachel Hodgson in the first round, comfortably winning 21-10, 21-6.
In the quarter-finals, the pair met Emily Jeffs and Megan Richardson, and eased to a 21-13, 21-14 victory.
They then met Rebekka Findlay and Caitlin Pringle in the semi-final, winning a tighter match 21-17, 21-18.
This set up a final against the number two seeds Reshmi Ouseph and Sandra Peaston. Lydia and Vicki controlled the first game, winning 21-15. The pair then held their nerve in a very tight second game to win 27-25.
Andrew Brownlie and partner, Luke Bailey (Kent), won the U14 Hampshire Open boys level doubles event on Sunday 5th May,2013.
Seeded number three, the pair eased through their qualifying box.
This lined up a semi-final showdown against the number two seeds, Kit Clement Dawson and Gregory Saunders. In a tense match, the pair wion out 21-10, 18-21, 22-20 to earn a place in the final against number one seeds Joshua Foot and Brandon Ngooi.
In a titanic final that really ebbed and flowed, the pair came out as eventual winers 21-19, 12-21, 25-23.
Vicky Roberts and partner, Elysia Taylor (Sussex), won a silver silver medal in the girls level doubles event.
Seeded number two, the girls also eased through their qualifying box to set up a semi-final match against Annie Lado and Tash Lado. The pair won this easily 21-6, 21-7.
Unfortunately, Elysia was then injured and the pair had to concede the final without playing a point.
Jonty Russ and partner, Edward Thorpe (Nottinghamshire), won a silver medal in the U16 Warwickshire Stars boys level doubles event on Saturday 4th May, 2013.
In a tough qualifying box, Jonty and Edward convincingly beat the number two seeds, Andrew Heinemann and Sam Lyle, 15-5, 15-7. They then dispatched James Pinder and Ben Sharples, follwed by Nathan Rossiter and Sam Smith, both in tough three game matches.
In the semi-final the pair beat the number three seeds, Ryan Quek and Jonathan Tang, 15-10, 15-12 to set up a final against the number one pairing of Kyle Cherry and Luke Pearce.
In a tough match, Jonty and Edward were edged out 15-9 and 15-11.
Freya Hodgson won the girls singles event in the U16 Kent Open on Saturday 27th April, 2013.
Freya won her box with victories over Millie Limrick (Essex) and Neha Madhotra (Bucks).
In the semi-finals, Freya faced Buckinghamshire’s Kerry-Anne Leaney, the number one seed for the tournament. Freya played out a convincing 21-12, 21-16 win to earn a place in the final against Northamptonshire’s Evie Burbidge.
After comfortably winning the first game of the final 21-12, a much tighter second game followed, with Freya coming out as the eventual winner 24-22.
Congratulations to Evan Blake for winning both the Boys’ Individual and Boys’ Doubles U12 titles at the Sussex Rising stars on the weekend, and to Issy Craig for winning the Girls’ U10 Doubles title.
The Sussex U13 Team travelled to the snowy Hertfordshire Sports Village at Hatfield on Saturday 23rd March 2013 to play in the Badminton England County Challenge finals. Performance Centre players Bea Noakes, Eva Craig, Jude Blackman, Kian Sobhanpanah, Owen West-Bourne and Zach Russ filled six of the nine places in the team.
The team played fantastically well, reaching the finals box alongside Buckinghamshire, Surrey and Yorkshire.
At the end of a long hard-fought day, the members of the team were awarded well-deserved bronze medals.
